While the likes of Oasis and Cast were busy resurrecting guitar-rock in the ‘90s, Richard David James was keeping electronica well and truly alive. Flying under the name of Aphex Twin, he championed ambient and techno music, to the approval of the growing rave scene.
Hailed as “the most inventive and influential figure in contemporary electronic music,” his first official album, Ambient Works 85 – 92, remains one of the most enduring electronica albums of all time. However, aficionados of his music often argue that the EP, Analogue Bubblebath, released a year earlier, is his seminal work.
Aphex Twin’s music sets itself apart from the crowd by refusing to follow the rules of more conventional electronica. Catchy hooks are offset against stuttering beats and futuristic sound effects. Cornish Acid is a prime example.
