Packing as much of a punch as the punk movement in the 1970s, the Beastie Boys came kicking and screaming onto the music scene in 1985.
While they might be famous as a hip-hop band, they drew their ‘screw you‘ attitude from punk bands, such as The Sex Pistols and The Clash. It wasn’t until 1983 that the Beasties fully embraced hip-hop and that gave rise to their first album, Licensed to Ill, and their first world-dominating track, You Gotta Fight For Your Right (To Party).
While they might have inspired a generation to wear VW badges, trainers and basketball caps, they also continued to push the boundaries between hip-hop, punk and the mainstream. While their mischievous first album thrust them into the spotlight, albums such as Paul’s Boutique and Ill Communication cemented their reputation as serious and innovative musicians.
