The Gypsy of Love, David Essex, has been charming audiences with his twinkling eyes and breathy vocals since the 1960s. While he started with the band, David Essex and the Mood Indigo, he’s best known for his work through the 70s and 80s.
After a stint in the musical, Godspell, Essex released his first solo single, Rock On. Selling more than 1million copies, it propelled him to pop-stardom and gave rise to fan hysteria, unseen since Beatlemania.
The 70s saw hit after hit, with the release of songs such as Gonna Make You a Star and Hold Me Close. He also continued to work as an actor, appearing in The Who’s Tommy and recording with Richard Burton on Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds.
More recently, he completed a spell in TV’s EastEnders, continues to tour and still draws wistful sighs from women of a certain age.
