GNR’s original ’85 line-up comprised of Axl Rose, Slash, Izzy Stradlin, Duff McKagan and Steven Adler. The band came lurching out of California’s hard rock scene and made an indelible mark on both mainstream and metal.
For many fans, the band’s original incarnation will always be its best. Before the addictions, rows and riots kicked in, GNR was typified by Rose’s tomcat yowl and Slash’s searing, soaring guitar licks. With Adler, Stradlin and McKagan stoking the musical engine room for all it was worth, Guns ‘n’ Roses cranked out a series of classics, most notably, Sweet Child o’ Mine, Paradise City and Welcome to the Jungle – all from their debut album, Use Your Illusion.
GNR inevitably followed the long-established rock-band template, succumbing to drugs, fame and clashing egos. After a lengthy hiatus and tense negotiations, Rose and Slash have put their differences aside and the Roses are rolling once more.
