There aren’t many musicians who describe hearing Don McLean’s, Vincent (Starry Starry Night), played on an episode of The Simpsons, as the moment of their musical epiphany. However, few musicians have enjoyed such a trebuchet trajectory as Jake Bugg.
Bugg’s career began when a local DJ sent one of his demo tapes to the radio station, BBC Introducing. The next day, he received a call asking him to play at Glastonbury, which brought him to the attention of other DJs, most notably Chris Evans, who championed him all the way to a record deal.
Influenced by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles and Donovan, Bugg’s music is no-frills folk ‘n’ roll. His breakthrough single, Lightning Bolt, was released in 2012 and remains one of his biggest hits. With his Dylan-esque delivery and chugging acoustic guitars, Bugg has proven that folk and rock have a place in modern music.
