Fronted by a singer with a penchant for outrageous headwear, Jamiroquai first burst onto the music scene, in 1992. Just as the wheels were turning for the arrival of guitar-driven bands, Jay Kay and his band of trippy troubadours threw their oversized hat into the ring, beginning the acid-jazz revolution.
The band’s first album, Emergency on Planet Earth, went straight to the Number 1 slot. Kay’s Stevie-Wonder-soundalike vocals, combined with hefty doses of funk and disco, took the single of the same name to number 14, in the charts.
Return of the Space Cowboy is, arguably, Jamiroquai’s other best-known work, with songs such as Space Cowboy and Stillness In Time gaining international airplay.
While the band went through a hiatus between 2011 and 2017, they have since released new material and appeared at the Coachella Music Festival in 2018. Whispers abound that the Space Cowboy may return once more.
