Hailing from California, Metallica is heavy-metal incarnate. Known for their pedal-to-the-floor tempo, searing solos and screw-you attitude, the band smashed onto the US music scene in 1981. While Metallica has been through a few line-ups, founders, James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich remain constant.
While their first two albums, Kill ‘Em All and Ride the Lightning gained them attention on the underground scene, it was their third, Master of Puppets that saw them thrust into the public consciousness. Raw and relentless, it’s been described as one of the most influential heavy metal albums of all time.
The ‘90s saw the band change direction, both musically and lyrically. Rather thanwriting about substance abuse and demons, they turned their attentions to themes such as rage, death and vengeance. Musically, they embraced the nuances of the grunge movement, resulting in Load. Anthemic and packed with grinding riffs, it remains one of their best works. Take a look at on-stage and rare behind-the-scenes pictures of the band in our collection of Metallica memorabilia.
