Formed in 1983 by Joseph Simmons, Darryl McDaniels and Jason Mizell, Run DMCwere hip-hop’s first VIPs and hailed as the most influential artists of the genre.
Their first album, RUN-D.M.C, was the first hip-hop album to become Gold Certified. Singles such as It’s Like That and Hard Times became playlist staples on New York radio stations and secured the band their position as bonafide superstars.
For the masses, Run DMC’s defining moment came with their cover of Aerosmith’s Walk This Way. Collaborating with the Boston rockers, the resulting single was the first rock-hip-hop hybrid to ever grace the charts.
Before Run DMC came onto the scene, their contemporaries were wearing stageoutfits that had more to do with ‘70s disco than hip-hop. Tired of this, the band set the precedent for wearing street clothes; a statement that’s been embraced by hip-hoppers that have followed in their Adidas-clad footsteps.
