Velvet-voiced and elegantly beautiful, Sade is one of the most iconic singers ofthe 1980s. Born in Nigeria but raised in Essex, Helen Folasade Adu originally trained to become a fashion designer at St Martin’s School of Art. However, a chance meeting with funk band Pride was to change everything.
On discovering that Sade could sing and write songs, they took her on as leadvocalist. Within months, they’d dispensed with their funk sensibilities, changed their name to Sade and embraced the jazzy, sultry sound that became the band’strademark. Their first album, Diamond Life, became one of the biggest-selling of the ‘80s.
Adu’s mellifluous vocals have drawn comparisons to the likes of Billie Holiday andinfluenced singers such as Beyoncé.
