Formed in Liverpool in 2001, The Zutons began a much-needed indie-pop revival. Taking their name from Bill ‘Zuton’ Harkleroad of The Magic Band, the band originally consisted of Dave McCabe, Sean Payne, Russell Pritchard and BoyanChowdhury. Abi Harding joined later, after proving herself a firm fan-favourite.
Although they only lasted eight years, The Zutons made their mark on the Noughties. Their first single, Valerie, was a runaway success and famously covered by Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson.
While the masses might know them as upbeat popsters, fans will know that indie rock and blues are at the core of The Zutons’ sound. You Will You Won’t has more than whiff of Hendrix’ Crosstown Traffic, while Why Won’t You Give Me Your Love? could be a modern take on a John Lee Hooker track.
The band split in 2009, but there have been reunion gigs and rumours of new work. Catch a glimpse of the early Zutons in our collection of pictures and posters.
