Born in Bedford, Tom Grennan originally set out to become a professional footballer. However, just as an opportunity to play in the US reared its head, Grennan changed his mind: “something was telling me not to and obviously it was the music”.
Grennan’s musical career was launched inauspiciously at a boozy house party, inwhich he sang Seaside by The Kooks. Although he had no memory of it, his friends were impressed enough to suggest that he pursue music as a profession. While at university, Grennan started gigging around London pubs and was spotted by a representative from Insanity Records.
His first album, Lightning Matches, was released in 2018. Songs such as I’ve Found What I’ve Been Looking For and Praying are an uplifting mix of taut guitars and his trademark grizzled growl. Authentic, bluesy and shot through with vulnerability, the sound is of a man wise beyond his years.
